Public consultation for Freshwater targets Version 2

Provide input on the draft guidance for Version 2 Freshwater targets

The SBTN Freshwater Hub has published draft technical guidance for Version 2 (V2) of the Freshwater science-based targets.

With an expected official launch in 2026, this updated guidance is grounded in the latest science. It expands the scope of the targets to include groundwater use and toxic chemical pollution – helping companies address a greater share of their freshwater impacts.

The public consultation on V2 draft guidance runs until October 9, 2025.  Contact SBTN if you are looking to share feedback after October 9 – short extensions are available upon request.

While the guidance is designed for corporate use, the public consultation invites broad stakeholder input to ensure the targets are both effective and locally appropriate. SBTN welcomes feedback from those with expertise in sustainability, ecology, environmental risk, and water including companies, industry coalitions, consultants, financial institutions, NGOs, academics, policy-makers as well as Indigenous Peoples, faith-based groups, youth organizations, affected stakeholders in water basins, and interested individuals without affiliations.

Interested parties can review the consultation resources and share feedback before October 9, 2025 via this survey.

Why Freshwater targets matter for business

Water risks are escalating.  From droughts and pollution to aquifer depletion and growing competition over scarce resources, companies that fail to act to address these risks face operational disruption, reputational damage, and increasing scrutiny from investors, regulators and communities.

Freshwater science-based targets are designed to help companies to take measurable, time-bound action with wide-reaching positive outcomes for ecosystems, communities, and local water users.

As expectations shift from disclosure to measurable impact, freshwater science-based targets offer a credible, actionable way to demonstrate leadership, business resilience and contribute to collective water security.

Companies don’t need to wait to start taking credible action.

SBTN’s Freshwater V1 targets are active and available for adoption today, offering companies a clear and science-based approach to begin addressing their freshwater impacts.

The current methods are built to align with the forthcoming V2 guidance, and will remain available for company adoption until 6 months after the release of V2 in 2026, giving companies a stable, actionable framework to work from today.

What's new in the Version 2 draft guidance?

Version 2 of SBTN’s freshwater targets will provide companies with a more comprehensive framework for addressing their water impacts.

It will complement the current freshwater methods – which help companies address surface water use and nutrient pollution – by introducing the first corporate guidance focused on addressing impacts related to unsustainable groundwater use and toxic chemicals pollution.

This marks a critical step toward – enabling meaningful corporate action on globally significant freshwater pressures that have lacked standardized, science-based guidance.

By expanding the scope of actionable targets, more companies can begin to set freshwater science-based targets. This expansion will be especially relevant for sectors with significant freshwater impacts across the value chain, including food and agriculture, fashion, textiles, beverage, and chemicals.
