Feasibility in Action

Practical ways to engage with SBTN’s methods

Nature is complex, and taking credible steps to protect it is no small task. But with the right guidance, companies can act with confidence.

At SBTN, we know that scientific rigor is essential – and that real progress happens when rigor is paired with real-world feasibility

That’s why our methods include a range of feasibility options to help companies get started sooner, focus on what matters most, and scale their efforts over time.

These reflect the flexibility companies need to engage based on their current capacity, data availability, and strategic priorities – without compromising the integrity of the target-setting process.

Feasibility updates informed by pilot insights

During target-setting piloting, the most common challenges that companies faced included:

  • Data availability: accessing data on impacts, for example water pollution, was challenging for some companies, particularly for their upstream.
  • Traceability: companies found that for parts of their upstream supply chain, it was difficult to trace commodities back to beyond the national level.
  • Resource limitations: the comprehensiveness of the SBTN methods presented a resource challenge to companies with impacts requiring targets to be set across a broad range of geographies and business areas.

To help more companies set science-based targets sooner, we have introduced new ways to improve feasibility without compromising scientific rigor. These options are available today, and reflected in the claims that companies can make. There are feasibility enhancements across Steps 1, 2, and 3 of SBTN, which are summarized below.

“We now know where to focus our efforts and where action is needed most. SBTN allowed us to move from improvements based on only our own experience to targets that we know are good enough for the planet."

Did You Know?

You don’t have to tackle everything at once to set science-based targets for nature.

  • If your company has impacts across the world, you can start small and stay credible:
  • Prioritize locations to focus on based on business needs.
  • Start with just one environmental realm, like Freshwater, even if you also impact land or ocean.
  • Don’t have upstream data for freshwater? You can start with a direct operations target in a specific location.
