Target setting process questions
Here we provide answers to common technical questions that companies have as they are going through the target-setting process.
The SBTN Land Hub, led by WWF and Conservation International, has published draft technical guidance for Version 2 of the Land science-based targets.
With an expected official launch in 2026, Version 2 incorporates the latest science, expands the scope of targets to address a broader range of land-related impacts and introduces greater flexibility for companies. The Version 2 draft guidance is open for public consultation now – closing May 27, 2025.
The public consultation invites broad stakeholder input, especially including those with expertise in sustainability, ecology, environmental risk, and land management. SBTN welcomes feedback from companies, consultants, financial institutions, NGOs, academics, policy-makers, Indigenous Peoples, faith-based groups, youth organizations, and interested individuals without affiliations.
Interested parties can review the public consultation resources in the dropdown menu below and share feedback by May 27, 2025, via this survey.
Resilient ecosystems are essential to the stability of corporate operations and supply chains. Yet human-driven climate change and nature loss are eroding this resilience – creating material risks for companies, people and the ecosystems they depend on.
SBTN’s Land methods provide consistent, rigorous guidance that helps responsible companies identify, quantify and reduce their contributions to key drivers of nature loss, such as land degradation. By taking action, companies can mitigate environmental risk, strengthen supply chain resilience, and build long-term business value.
SBTN Land targets complement climate science-based targets from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) by addressing impacts that carbon targets may not, such as land degradation, biodiversity loss, and pollution, enabling a more integrated and effective nature and climate strategy.
Companies don’t need to wait to start taking credible action.
SBTN’s Land Version 1 targets are active and available for adoption today, offering companies a clear and science-based approach to begin addressing their land impacts.
Version 1 is designed to be compatible with the forthcoming Version 2 guidance and incentivize corporate efforts aligned with Version 2, with data that will remain directly relevant for future target-setting. Version 1 will continue to be valid for six months after the release of Version 2 in 2026, giving companies a stable, actionable framework to work from now.
Launching 2026, Version 2 (V2) of the Land targets builds on Version 1 with the latest science, greater specificity and expanded impact coverage.
The updated methods are designed to provide companies with the most rigorous and place-based approach yet – enabling them to better understand their land-related impacts, align with global goals, and quantify their contributions to meaningful land improvements.
The graphic below summarizes some of the ways coverage will expand in V2. To learn more, read this two-page summary, and explore the draft guidance in full to go deeper.
