City climate targets
Science-based targets for climate in cities: guidance for local governments
Supporting Climate targets since 2020
Our cities guide for climate science-based targets was developed in 2020 by our core ‘cities’ partners CDP, C40, Global Covenant of Mayors, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF).
The guide, based on technical research and testing, reviews three science-based climate target methodologies and their criteria. It helps cities choose the right methodology to determine interim and net zero targets.
New guidance supports cities in setting science-based targets for nature
Nature loss and climate change crises are fundamentally interlinked. Local and national governments are called to tackle them side by side.
Launched in 2026, initial guidance on science-based targets for nature in cities offers a practical step-by-step approach for cities to assess, prioritize, and set targets for urban nature – with flexibility to adapt to different data availability, governance contexts, and capacity levels.
