A global stage for ocean action
The 2025 UN Ocean Conference (UNOC), hosted by France and Costa Rica from June 9 to 13 in Nice, France, will be a defining moment. Under the theme “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean,” governments, businesses, scientists, and civil society will converge to shape the Nice Ocean Action Plan: a concise, action-oriented declaration backed by voluntary commitments.
The Science Based Targets Network will be represented throughout the week, with the recently-launched Ocean targets featured in multiple events.
Key events featuring SBTN
Tuesday, June 10: WWF Ocean Conference
WWF is hosting a conference, during which, multiple panels relate to and feature SBTN’s Ocean Hub and science-based targets for seafood:
- A Nature-Positive Future for Coastal Tourism | 2:00pm – 3:30pm (CEST)
This session will showcase how coastal tourism sector leadership, solutions and actions can contribute to achieving a nature-positive future for our ocean. It will convene both coastal tourism sustainability leaders and those actors who can have a meaningful impact on sector-wide transformation, including thought leaders, policy makers and financial institutions. Collectively, through concerted solution-oriented action and with the right tools and resources in place, the discussion will show how it will be possible to chart a course towards a nature-positive future for the ocean. - Consolidating a sustainable value chain for fisheries resources | 4:00pm – 5:00pm (CEST)
This session will highlight how companies, institutions and NGOs are advancing more transparent and ocean-friendly practices. It will explore how collaboration, supported by frameworks and solution-oriented tools, can help reduce industry impact and support the health of marine ecosystems. - Accelerating progress toward 30×30 goals | 5:20pm – 6:20pm (CEST)
The ocean holds incredible, diverse wildlife and ecosystems but the underwater world that covers so much of our planet is under threat, risking not only amazing species, but also our way of life. Following a presentation of clips from the new Ocean with David Attenborough film, panelists will discuss best practices and successful mechanisms for delivering on 30×30 targets and implementing resilient and inclusive conservation.
