Below are the latest updates from the SBTN Issue Hubs. These entries will be updated regularly.
Last updated: September 2023
The SBTN Freshwater Hub – co-led by CDP and WWF – hosted a session at World Water Week, which took place in Stockholm, Sweden last month. Business leaders from companies including Suntory, H&M and Nestle, which are part of the first group of companies setting science-based targets for nature, expressed the benefits of the SBTN framework to their business. They highlighted that the methodologies allow them to prioritize actions and ambitions, and that the target-setting process and outcomes can help engage and empower their value chains. They also agreed that outcomes can help inform if they’re on the right track – and importantly, validate the direction they’re taking. As the pilot continues into early 2024, learn how your company can take steps toward target-setting.
The first land targets are at a beta stage and have undergone an internal consultation with experts across industry, academia and NGOs, followed by both expert review panel and public consultations for broader representation. They are currently being piloted in 2023 by the initial group of target-setting companies.
The goal is to capture learnings from the corporate pilot, in order to make optimizations ahead of a version 1 roll-out, aiming for the first half of 2024.
The SBTN Biodiversity Hub addressed the coverage of biodiversity in the first methods release in a technical paper and presented high level approaches to address gaps. This will be followed with a more detailed analysis to be published later in the year outlining plans for subsequent releases.
The Ocean Hub, co-led by Conservation International and WWF, will finalize the first draft of its targets for the seafood value chain later this year, and begin recruiting companies to pilot the methods.
