Regional Initiative

SBTN’s regional initiative in South Africa was led by the National Business Initiative (NBI), a co-convener of TNFD in South Africa. The initiative targeted South African companies committed to nature-positive business practices and sought to engage first-mover companies in preparing to set science-based targets for nature.

Background

In 2024, SBTN contracted NBI to co-develop a South African corporate engagement strategy with a working group of companies, consulting partners, and NGOs. Building on this foundation, NBI is now leading a capacity-building programme focused on training companies in the SBTN methodology and supporting them to take credible action on nature.

NBI delivered training through the Nature Exchange accelerator, structured around an Assess, Commit, and Disclose (ACD) framework. The programme has generated strong early momentum, with initial modules drawing over 140 RSVPs from major companies and organisational representatives.

Given South Africa’s regional water scarcity challenges, the initiative placed strategic emphasis on supporting companies as they explored water-related targets, including science-based freshwater targets under the SBTN framework.

Leveraging its role as a TNFD co-convener, NBI also facilitated peer learning sessions on the interoperability between the TNFD and SBTN frameworks.
