Frequently asked questions

The Step Up for Nature initiative is a global call for companies to take credible, science-based action for nature through the Science Based Targets Network. It invites companies to publicly signal their next intended milestone toward setting science-based targets for nature – helping to demonstrate collective private-sector momentum ahead of the 2026 Global Biodiversity Stocktake (the first global review of progress on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework).

The initiative focuses on the first three steps of the science-based target-setting process. Within these steps, companies can progress through one or several steps together – first signaling their ambition, then completing the required work, and finally achieving independent validation through SBTN’s validation host, the Accountability Accelerator.

The Ambition Board is a public dashboard that showcases the growing group of companies stepping up for nature. It highlights each company’s next milestones, intended timeline, and the collective momentum toward setting science-based targets for nature.

  • Timeline: The date by which the company intends to submit this milestone for validation.
  • Step: The Step the company aims to submit for validation. This step may be for a specific business unit, value chain segment, or realm if the company is using SBTN’s accelerated pathways.
  • Company: Companies can have multiple entries on the ambition board – each corresponding to one step and associated timeline. “Date added” refers to the date SBTN published this company’s ambition.  “Date updated” refers to the date SBTN updated this company’s ambition (e.g., if the company updated its ambition timeline).
  • Country: The country the company is headquartered in.

The Ambition Board displays companies’ intended next milestones and timelines. A company completes its milestone when it submits its work to the Accountability Accelerator for validation. Once the work is validated and the company chooses to publicly disclose (in line with SBTN’s claims guidance), the milestone appears on the SBTN Target Tracker, which is the authoritative source for validated progress.

Because the validation process takes time, there will be a lag between a company’s submission and when their milestone appears on the Target Tracker. The Target Tracker also publishes an aggregate number of companies that have completed validation but are not yet ready for public disclosure.

Companies on the Ambition Board can request timeline or scope adjustments on their intended milestones, and SBTN continues to encourage and support companies whose timelines have passed but who have not yet submitted for validation.

SBTN updates the Ambition Board on a rolling basis to reflect new sign-ups. Validated and disclosed milestones are added to the Target Tracker once companies choose to make them public.
