Freshwater science-based targets: public consultation open now for version 2

28/08/2025

Today, at World Water Week, the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) is launching a public consultation on the draft technical guidance for Version 2 of the Freshwater science-based targets.

The Version 2 guidance is grounded in the latest science. It expands the scope of the current targets to include groundwater use and toxic chemical pollution – helping companies address a greater share of their freshwater impacts.

The Freshwater Hub is seeking broad stakeholder input – especially from those with expertise in sustainability, ecology, environmental risk, and water. The public consultation will remain open until October 9, 2025. Following the consultation, the V2 guidance is anticipated to be officially released in the second half of 2026.

In the meantime, Freshwater Version 1 targets, published in 2024, are available for adoption now and compatible with the forthcoming Version 2 guidance, enabling companies to start taking credible, science-based action on freshwater today.
