Applications open for companies to pilot expanded land targets
The Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) is launching a pilot for companies to set and validate expanded Land targets. The guidance incorporates the latest science, expands the scope of the targets to address a broader range of land-related impacts, and introduces greater flexibility options.
Ahead of the official launch of the expanded targets in Q2 2026, SBTN is seeking participants to pilot the Version 2 guidance. Building on input from the public consultation earlier in 2025, piloting companies will help further refine the methods and validation process to ensure the targets are credible, practical and ready to scale.
What are the benefits for participating companies?
Companies that participate in the validation pilot will have access to:
- Free validation of land targets
- Dedicated office hours and technical support with SBTN experts
- Recognition as a first-mover through SBTN communications and events (with additional opportunities for companies publicly disclosing)
Who can participate?
Companies are encouraged to apply for the validation pilot by October 17, if they:
- Have land-related impacts in operations or supply chain, with at least some sourcing traceability to the sub-national level.
- Note: Preference will be given to companies that are able to trace at least a small fraction of sourcing to the production unit of origin.
- Can commit to complete Step 1: Assess and Step 2: Prioritize during the pilot (if not already completed). Scoping down to relevant business unit, realm, and/or value chain segment is encouraged.
- Note: Preference will be given to companies who have already completed Step 1: Assess and Step 2: Prioritize.
- Can appropriately staff the work, either internally or via external consultants
- Can demonstrate senior leadership support & commitment to setting science-based targets
Interested, but not sure your company meets the eligibility criteria?
Your company can also participate as an observer. While the validation pilot will be limited to a small group of companies, other companies can join as observers, to:
- Gain early access to the new methods
- Join the pilot group office hours and participate in technical Q&A
- Test and learn from the process without committing to validation.
How can companies get involved?
- Companies interested in participating in the validation pilot or as observers can apply via this form by October 17. The pilot will begin later in October 2025.

Current Land targets remain active
SBTN’s Land Version 1 targets are active and can be validated now, providing companies with a clear, science-based framework to begin addressing their land impacts. They are designed to be compatible with the forthcoming expanded guidance, meaning data and progress from Version 1 will remain directly relevant when companies set future targets. Version 1 will remain valid for six months after the release of the expanded targets in 2026, giving companies a stable and actionable starting point now.
