Southeast Asia
Regional Initiative
SBTN’s regional initiative in Southeast Asia (SEA) was led by Bestari Sustainability Indonesia and includes 38+ local organizations from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. The initiative’s current priorities are to raise local awareness and understanding of science-based targets for nature, support companies and regional partners in aligning with SBTN methodologies, provide capacity-building through technical training, resources, and localized engagement, and act as a regional bridge between SBTN and key stakeholders in Southeast Asia.
Background
The SEA initiative was launched in 2023, hosted by CDP, with a focus on introducing SBTN and raising awareness of nature issues among corporations in the region.
Building on this foundation, in 2024 the initiative shifted to deepening regional understanding of SBTN’s core steps through a webinar series. The series engaged 41 participants and aimed to build capacity, promote the application of SBTN across the region, engage regional stakeholders, and gather feedback to support broader implementation.
In November 2025, Bestari kicked off a new chapter of the SEA regional initiative with a launch event titled “Driving Corporate Net Zero and Nature Positive in Southeast Asia: Navigating Nature Loss through the Science Based Targets Network.” The event was delivered in partnership with Kadin Net Zero Hub, UN Global Compact Network Indonesia, Indonesia Business Council for Sustainable Development, and Water Stewardship Indonesia, and attracted over 100 participants from across sectors. During the same period, Bestari also presented science-based targets for nature to companies in the palm oil sector at an RSPO side event in Malaysia.
In February 2026, Bestari Sustainability convened a technical workshop on SBTN Step 1 – Assess, in collaboration with Equatorise, TÜV SÜD, and the Indonesia Business Council for Sustainable Development (IBCSD), hosted by Kadin Indonesia in Jakarta. The workshop aimed to strengthen corporate capacity to identify, prioritize, and understand business impacts and dependencies on nature, and to support companies in preparing nature-related reporting aligned with frameworks including GRI and TNFD.
