Holcim announces new science-based targets for freshwater

20/11/2025

November 20, 2025 – Global building materials and solutions company Holcim has set and validated three new freshwater quantity targets.

In October 2024, Holcim set an ambitious target to reduce freshwater withdrawals in its direct operations, targeting the Moctezuma basin in Mexico.

Now, the company has set three additional targets, focused on priority basins in Belgium, Greece and Spain.

“At Holcim, we strongly believe that science-based targets for nature are the way forward for our sector and beyond. These ambitious new targets are further proof of our leadership in this space. Building a nature-positive future is central to our NextGen Growth strategy as sustainability drives profitable growth.” – Carmen Diaz, Chief People & Sustainability Officer, Holcim

Holcim’s latest targets have each been validated by the Accountability Accelerator:

  • In Belgium, Holcim will reduce its freshwater withdrawal in its direct operations in the Haine Basin, to 2,534,150 m3 by 2035 – a 38% reduction compared to a 2020-2024 average.
  • In Greece, Holcim will reduce its freshwater withdrawal in its direct operations in the Cyclades Basin, to 53,082 m3 by 2030 – a 23% reduction compared to a 2020-2024 average.
  • In Spain, Holcim will reduce its freshwater withdrawal in its direct operations in the Onyar basin, to 174,128 m3 by 2030 – a 16% reduction compared to a 2020-2024 average.

“SBTN welcomes Holcim’s newly validated freshwater science-based targets to reduce freshwater withdrawals across three priority European basins. This demonstrates credible action for nature and a clear investment in long-term business resilience. We encourage other companies in their sector and beyond to follow their lead and step up for nature.” – Erin Billman, CEO, Science Based Targets Network (SBTN)

To establish their targets, Holcim collaborated with stakeholders across the value chain, including with water authorities, NGOs and academia at both national and local level. Setting these targets at the basin level enables Holcim to proactively engage with local stakeholders, safeguard vital freshwater resources for communities and nature, and advance its freshwater withdrawal reduction targets.
