Accountability Accelerator launches validation services for science-based targets for nature
The Accountability Accelerator, part of the Global Commons Alliance and host of the independent validation function of the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN), has officially opened its validation service for companies setting science-based targets for nature.
From February 20, 2025, eligible companies can start using the Accountability Accelerator’s validation service to obtain independent verification of their nature targets, in a critical milestone for science-based action to address corporate impacts on nature.
“With over 150 companies preparing to set science-based targets for nature, the launch of the Accountability Accelerator’s validation service means companies can now take the critical next step to ensure the credibility and scientific robustness of their targets,” says SBTN Executive Director, Erin Billman. “Validated targets are the foundation for credible action and accountability, and we urge all companies to follow our corporate trailblazers.”
Three companies – Kering, GSK and Holcim – have already validated and publicly adopted the first science-based targets for nature following SBTN’s year-long corporate pilot program which concluded last year. A select group of companies are already using the Accountability Accelerator’s new validation service ahead of its official launch following the conclusion of the pilot. Now, the doors are open for more companies to step up and join the movement.

How the target validation service works
Eligible companies can apply to have their target-setting work validated, earning a credible stamp of approval to demonstrate their action for nature.
Once a company submits their application, the Accountability Accelerator validation process will determine whether the submissions are in line with the latest scientific requirements for reversing and halting nature loss by 2030, based on target-setting methods developed by SBTN. Currently, methods developed by SBTN are available for materiality assessment and prioritization, and freshwater and land targets. Ocean target methods will be available from March 2025.
Companies don’t need to complete the entire target-setting process to start using the validation services. For example, companies can first have their materiality assessment validated, establishing a credible foundation for future target-setting. Additionally, they can choose to focus on specific parts of their organization, enabling a phased approach. Companies also have the flexibility to set targets in just one realm, such as freshwater, rather than committing to all environmental areas at once. This provides companies with a structured yet flexible approach to taking meaningful action on nature while ensuring transparency and accountability.
