Support biodiversity with science-based action

Dear Colleague,

Today is the International Day for Biological Diversity – an important moment to recognize and celebrate the richness of life on Earth, and the many ways our lives depend on it.

Biodiversity underpins the ecosystems and services businesses rely on – like clean water, pollination, and pest management. Loss of biodiversity puts supply chains, operations, and long-term business value at risk, and companies are facing increasing pressure to address their impacts and dependencies on nature.

At SBTN, we have equipped companies with the first science-based targets for nature to address drivers of biodiversity loss. First, companies use biodiversity data to inform where action is needed most. Next, they set targets to reduce pressures they can control – like land conversion and freshwater pollution – and take steps to improve their overall impacts on nature. By reducing these pressures and improving outcomes where it matters most, companies help create the conditions for biodiversity to recover and contribute to nature positive outcomes.

The graphic below provides a helpful overview of how SBTN methods support biodiversity, and you can learn more about that integration here.

New Learning Resources Available Now

Today, we’re pleased to share new tools and resources that make the target-setting process more accessible, equipping more stakeholders to advocate for biodiversity action and address impacts sooner.

We’ve launched a new suite of on-demand learning resources to support companies in setting science-based targets for nature.

These resources will help companies:

  • Understand what’s required for target setting
  • Align teams around key concepts and expectations
  • Make the business case for action using real-world examples
  • Troubleshoot implementation questions as they arise

I encourage you to explore these new resources, and continue reading below to find more updates and opportunities to engage with the network.

All my best,

Erin Billman

The Version 2 draft guidance is open for public consultation now – closing May 27, 2025.

Explore the draft guidance here and find out how to participate.

Connect with SBTN at the UN Ocean Conference and London Climate Action Week

SBTN representatives will be attending both events, and we’re open to connecting and collaborating. If you’re interested in setting up a meeting to discuss science-based targets for nature, or you’re organizing an event that could benefit from SBTN’s perspective, we’d love to hear from you.
