KLS PurePrint shows that smaller companies can make validated progress through SBTN

07/05/2026

KLS PurePrint, a Danish printing and packaging company, has publicly disclosed validated progress in assessing and prioritizing its impacts on nature using the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) methodology, with validation provided by the Accountability Accelerator.

This gives KLS a clearer, science-based foundation for understanding where its most significant impacts on nature occur across its operations and value chain, and where target-setting should be prioritized first.

For KLS, whose supply chain depends heavily on forests and water, the process confirmed the importance of forestry-related supply chains such as paper and board, alongside water use in production. It also helped identify priority geographies for further supplier engagement and future action, including Sweden, Austria, Slovakia, and the UK.

“We are very proud to have reached this milestone. Nature matters deeply to us at KLS, and working to understand and reduce our impact is something we take very seriously. For us, this is not just about documentation; it is about building a solid foundation for prioritizing the right actions and taking the next steps in a credible way to make our printing and packaging material even more environmentally friendly,” says Janni Toft Nielsen, CEO of KLS PurePrint.

KLS’s progress is also a strong example of how smaller companies can engage with SBTN. As an small company with 34 employees, KLS used the process to deepen supplier engagement, strengthen its decision-making, and build on existing sustainability work, including Cradle to Cradle certification and FSC-certified sourcing.

“By validating its science-based materiality assessment and prioritization, KLS PurePrint shows that smaller companies can make credible progress on the journey to science-based targets for nature. This validated milestone gives KLS a clear foundation for identifying where impacts are greatest, prioritizing the right next steps, and reinforcing credibility with customers and other stakeholders,” said SBTN CEO Erin Billman.

KLS plans to continue the journey toward science-based targets for nature, while further refining geographic sourcing traceability as part of its wider strategy.
